CE Marking

To sell any electronics product within the European Union, a given product must comply with a standard, or standards that are relevant to the equipment. Certification is company self-declaration and a technical file must be maintained. The person whom signs the Declaration of Conformity carries the responsibility for the standard, or standards being declared. Therefore if it important to design for the appropriate standard at the start of any product’s design state and to maintain a complete technical file containing:

1. The Low-Voltage Directive (LVD) for product safety

2. The Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) covering electro-magnetic emissions and the susceptibility

3. The Radio & Telecommunications Terminal Equipment (R&TTE) for transmitting/receiving equipment

4. The Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) directive

UL Marking

To sell any electronics product within North America, a given product must comply with a standard, or standards that are relevant to the equipment. Certification is only by Underwriters Laboratories. Approval is maintained by periodic inspection by UL.

Where a standard is harmonized, compliance with one body, does not imply compliance with another. A given product has to be re-assessed. Therefore is multiple approvals are required e.g. CE ad UL, careful consideration must be given at the design stage to components and PCB layout.
